Pastel Sunset Over Manhattan | Long Island City Family Photographer

It’s no secret, my favorite season is fall. The air is brisk and filled with energy, the trees explode with golden hues and the sun sits just a little lower in the sky creating gorgeous light and pastel sunsets.  It’s no wonder that fall is the most popular time for clients to schedule sessions. Fall is like our little gift from mother nature, encouraging us to spend as much of our time outside as possible before the city turns white and is covered in snow. This session was on one of those last few beautiful days before winter crept in. The air was quite brisk and I had to work a bit with the wind, I think my fingers were nearly frozen by the time we wrapped up. But these sweet little girls didn’t seem fazed at all by any of that. Besides, I’m starting to get a little old now and my circulation is not so great anymore. The sunset did not disappoint and this gorgeous little family was overflowing with energy and joy. Against the backdrop of Manhattan with a family that shares so much love for each other, we set out to create images for their family to treasure for generations

Absolutely Smitten | Long Island City Newborn Photographer

As a brand new mom, it is not uncommon to feel completely overwhelmed and indecisive. You’re holding your fragile newborn in your arms, overcome with joy and yet every small task can feel like climbing Mount Everest with nothing more than a walking stick. When the mommy of this little blue eyed stunner first contacted me in hopes of a newborn session, she was a bit stressed because he was already 3 weeks new and well past that squishy newborn stage. I assured her that it’s not too late (imagine that, too late for newborn portraits at 3 weeks!). At this stage with a newborn, it’s a great time for lifestyle images in your nursery and in your home where your new family is bonding and settling in.  I’d say, this couple has settled into parenthood quite cozily and are absolutely smitten with their new little guy!

She was also concerned about having the session done at her apartment because the nursery was not completed yet and her new bedroom furniture had not yet arrived. We spoke thoroughly about her concerns and I offered to only utilize the permanent fixtures in her nursery and home so that she wouldn’t look back at them images and feel that they nursery wasn’t complete.

During the session I took advantage of the beautiful window light and added just a touch of flash (a speedlite) in an umbrella to fill the shadows. I find that combining flash with available light provides the smoothest transitions in your shadows and it’s not a look one can achieve with their IPhone. Most of the images were captured with my 50mm 1.4 prime lens, which allowed me to let in plenty of light while giving a beautiful blur with the sharp fall off of focus. This is what gives these images their soft and creamy look.

Based in New York, I’ve become quite acquainted to working within small spaces. and this was no exception. It often takes a bit of creative thinking and experimenting with angles within my client’s home. While capturing the family together, I was literally standing on a bed while shooting. But this provided a great opportunity for me to crack jokes with my clients in order to capture genuine expressions. In the image dad hold his new son, I utilized the nursery door and door frame to vignette the image and create depth while shooting from outside the room. This helps create a sense of intimacy within the images. Capturing intimacy and emotion within my images is the most important aspect to me personally. I feel that if an image can provoke a warmth or emotion within my viewer, then I’m successful.

Don’t these new parents look absolutely smitten?

If you’re expecting, contact us today. Most sessions must be scheduled at least 4 weeks in advance due to high demand.

SISTERS IN THE SUNSHINE

It is always such an honor every time a new client contacts me to schedule a portrait session, and this family was no exception. Having just recently moved out of the city, these beautiful girls traveled back in from Hoboken for a picturesque central park portrait session and their personalities just sparkled. They have such sweet adoration for each other and it shined through in all their images, as they played in the warm glowing sunshine.
