The Rainbow Leaf

Fall Children’s Portraits in Central Park

Family Photographer, Natural Kids Photography – New York, NY

There is nothing more refreshing than the first few days of fall. The brisk air and nature’s golden confetti trickling down as if to say “winter is coming, come out and play before the ground turns white and the sky becomes gray”. My eldest son is 5 years old and just at the age where his curiosity is peaking in such a way that I get little glimpses into the world through his eyes. He reaches down and shrieks with joy “Mommy! I found a rainbow leaf! Can you believe it? It’s yellow, green and brown!” The genuine wonder and amazement children experience through discovery leaves me in awe. Surely it would be bliss to never grow up!

A Third Birthday Party at FAO Schwarz | NYC Birthday Photographer, Natural Kids Photography,

What could be more special than celebrating your big 3rd birthday on the big piano at FAO with all your friends? Yup I know, I can’t think of anything better either!

Little Ben’s birthday at FAO was one of the most exciting amd energetic birthday’s I’ve ever photographed. His very own live toy soldier started out the festivities with a bit of juggling and games that had all the kids running and squealing in laughter. And just when we thought the kiddo’s would be all tuckered out, we headed out to the iconic Big Piano for a private play session that followed a mini concert from Ben’s personal toy soldier! As if that wasn’t enough, Ben then had the honor of blowing out the candles on a super cute monkey cake from Sugar & Plumm NYC – who makes the most delicious cakes, cupcakes and desserts!!! If you are ever out on the Upper West Side, be sure to stop in for a treat or just some lunch as the entire menu is  “yumm”. Actually, the decor alone is worth a stop.

This little guy had a blast of a celebration. All the kids were filled with such excitement and the energy in the air combined with all the warmth and love from his friends made this event one of the record books. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed creating them!

NY Baby Model, how to get your child into modeling and represented by an agency

“Your baby should be a model!”

Many parents have had strangers say these exact words to them. When I had my first son, I thought he was so cute and eventually I thought that I would look into the options available here in NYC for child talent. Initially, I had no idea where to even start. I had heard in the past to steer clear from anyone asking for money, but who exactly should I turn to? After much research, and let me tell you it was hours & days of research, we submitted photos and my son was selected by a few agencies for interviews and then we selected whom we wanted him to be represented by.

I have often felt that this industry is an industry of secrets. It seems that many people on the “inside” don’t want to share information with others for fear of competition. Because of this, it is so difficult for new parents who want to open doors and pursue their child’s talent. As a photographer, many clients have asked me “how can I get my child into modeling?” The answer is not a simple one and I’ve been promising many moms that I would eventually blog about this topic, so now that winter is here and my holiday portrait sessions are wrapping up, I’m finally fulfilling that promise.

There are a few important things to consider prior to investing your time:

  1. Do you have the time and freedom? Be prepared that once you have representation that you will often only have a 24 hour notice from you agent prior to a casting call. Often times, we have been called for auditions the same day. Living in the city has made this far easier on us, but sometimes I have had to “drop everything” in order to make it happen.
  2. Is your child flexible? Are able to change their schedule and still get nothing but smiles? If so, you may have a winner. Remember that the demands on your schedule are also demands on your child’s schedule.
  3. Can you handle rejection? Trust me, even the most beautiful children are consistently rejected at auditions, and it has nothing to do with how beautiful they are. It can be frustrating, but remember that every casting agent is looking for something specific, a certain style, look, ethnic ambiguity or even certain abilities. You must be able to handle the rejection and be positive, eventually you WILL book a job!

What you will need:

You will need a nice, clear (in focus), portrait (think head shot) of your child. Children change so often and so quickly, so agencies do not expect you to spend the money on professional portraits of your child. Most parents will be able to use snapshots from their home camera. Be sure that you dress your child appropriately for their photo. They should wear a plain, solid colored top that does not contain graphics or logos. Also, it is best to avoid black, white or red clothing. Choose a bright, vibrant color that compliments your child’s skin and eye tone. Keep an eye out for another blog post coming soon that will help guide you in taking great snapshots of your little ones.

Once you’ve selected the perfect photo of your child, you will need to have prints made. Preferably 8×10’s and as always I recommend that my clients use www.mpix.com for prints. Their color and print quality is far superior to any drug store and many online photo labs. When your prints arrive, you will need to include your child’s information on the reverse side of the photo. The easiest way to do this is to print out Avery labels and stick them on the back.

Here is the info you need to include:

LEGAL NAME:

CLOTHING SIZE:

ETHNICITY:

DATE OF BIRTH:

HEIGHT:

WEIGHT:

HAIR:

EYE COLOR:

SHOE SIZE:

BEST CONTACT #:

ALT#:

EMAIL:

SOCIAL SECURITY #:

Now you are finally ready to get your babe some representation and casting calls! Yay! Here is a list of some of the top agencies here in New York that I recommend mailing your child’s photo to. You should include a cover page with your contact information and your child’s information. If your child has already worked in the past, be sure to include their resume. It will usually take 2-4 weeks to hear back from an agency and they will only contact you if they are interested in working with your child.

New York Baby Photographer, the best time to photograph your newborn baby, infant, and toddler.

Many parents often ask how often they should schedule a portrait session of their new child. It’s true, you’ll want to get in a few sessions during the first year of your newborn’s life. Your newborn will grow and change so much in the first year and you’ll want to document their mailestones along the way.  Though for all the snap happy mommies and daddies out there,  I have to remind them that they only have so much wall space in their home, so every session should be meaningful. Here is a simple guide on how to know when your child is ready for their next portrait:

The Newborn: 0-12 days old

I always reccomend to not waste a moment to schedule your child’s first session, your newborn will be the easiest to photograph within the first two weeks of life. What’s so special about that time frame? Primarily, it is their sleep pattern. During the first two weeks of your child’s life, they will continue to sleep deeply just as they did in the womb. This makes them the most ideal for sweet squishy baby images. Another reason to keep in mind is that newborns tend to have perfect skin during the first weeks of life. Shortly after this time frame, many infants shed a layer of skin (my first son had this, and his skin “peeled” for what seemed like forever!), while others develop infant acne on their face. And, believe it or not, after the first weeks of life your precious little one will start taking on the appearance of a baby, rather than a newborn. The exception: if your newborn is premature and spends a little extra time in the hospital nursery, the timeline applies a little differently and we’ll work with you and your newborn to make sure you get the perfect memorable images! If possible, I reccomend that newborn portraits take place in your home as this is a better representation of life than a sterile studio look.

The Sitter: 5-8 months old

The next milestone to document is “the sitter”. The sitting stage is one of my favorite baby stages to photograph. What defines this stage is that your child is just now able to sit up on their own, but not yet able to scoot or crawl. What makes this new skill of your childs life so special is that it changes their whole view of the world. Babies at this age just seem to have a whole new sense of wonder in their eyes and are eager to smile at even the most minimal things.

First Birthday!

The biggest milestone to capture is your child’s first birthday! As your child reaches their first anniversary of life I reccomend scheduling a portrait session that focuses on your one year old and also includes the rest of your immediate family. Your child now has a personality all their own and they understand the relationship of your family. It’s also a perfect time to capture their new skills of standing, walking or perhaps playing with a family heirloom toy.
